Fresno State Day

September 23, 2023

by Betzabel Macedo

Fresno State had an event where they invited Trio Programs and CAL-SOAP. Students were able to do workshops that gave them information on what type of person they are and how that will come into play when choosing a major, bulldog bound information and got to hear a panel of Fresno State students. After the workshops Fresno State provided dinner from Tacos Marquitos and then headed to the Fresno State football game.

It was fun being with my friends and being able to have a great time while also getting to learn more about the Fresno State campus culture.

The panelists included two past members of Upward Bound, Elijiah Williams and Chris Gutierrez, and two former students of other Trio Programs, Stephanie and Ruth. They were asked who inspired and encouraged them to go to college a lot of them responded with them saying it was their parents that pushed them to get a higher education and being first gen. They were asked by the audience what helped them get started and what was a struggle they went through. A popular answer amongst the panelist were time management and finances. Although Stephanie said her biggest problem was being from El Salvador. She said she had to complete a lot more paperwork since she wasn’t born in the country.  The panelist ended it off by saying how Fresno State feels like home to them and that Fresno State is such a positive environment making them feel safe and heard.

Later that night, the Trio Programs and CAL-SOAP went to go see the Fresno State football game against Ohio Kent State. The ending score was 53-10. The game left an amazing experience for many of the students. The students saw the Fresno State marching band and Cheer team perform before the game started.

I think it was a genuinely inspiring experience as a senior who is still choosing what college to go to. I saw how campus life was and how their school spirit goes far beyond just the college students, but even our whole city and community. I think that taking us to the game gave us students a taste of what it would be like to go to a school that is proud of themselves and wants to spread that pride to everyone.
