FHS Winter Guard and Winter Percussion

by Vanessa Flores

The Fresno High Winter Guard and Winter Percussion occurs from December to April. Although the FHS WG&WP are both overseen by Mr. Corey Reynolds, the Color Guard is coached by Noah Ramos and Winter Percussion by Lupe Ramon. The two groups practice every Tuesday and Thursday from 4 to 6 pm. Recently, they attended their third competition of the season on Saturday, March 2, in Hanford, California. The guard competition took place at Sierra Pacific High School and Winter Percussion at Handford West High School.

Like most competition days, the two groups met at Fresno High with enough time to change and load their equipment. After, they departed for SPHS, with enough time to practice before show time. Once their performance was finished, the Guard waited behind for their award ceremony as Percussion headed to HWHS to warm up with the remaining time before their show. After their performance and clean-up, they head off to eat thanks to the boosters.

With the time between awards, the WG&WP are expected to act as a respectful audience towards competing schools. During their awards, the WG placed fourth and at the two competitions before, they placed first. WP placed sixth and in the two competitions before, they placed eighth and third.

Regional Band Day

by Joshua Butz

The performing arts aim to foster diverse and creatively adventurous individuals at local, national, and international levels, emphasizing excellence, community involvement, audience engagement, and personal fulfillment through the arts.

On Regional Band Day, which took place at Royce Hall, students in grades 5-12 from 12 different schools in the Fresno high region gathered to rehearse music for a concert. The repertoire included "Merrily We Roll Along" and "Au Claire de la Lune" for Elementary, "Aunt Rhody Plays a Visit" for Middle School, and "Ascentuim" for high school, culminating in a joint performance of "Hot Cross Buns.”

The event concluded with a concert for the community and families, highlighting the significance of Regional Band Day in inspiring students to continue their musical pursuits. Witnessing almost 500 musicians performing together is truly remarkable, offering insight into the progression from elementary to high school and the exciting musical prospects ahead.

Moreover, Regional Band Day provides a platform for students to showcase their growth and collaboration within the community. These experiences not only encourage risk-taking but also fulfill educational goals and are overseen by the Arts Education manager. The coordination of the Fresno High regional music events is led by the region's music teachers and organized by Mrs. Morehead.
