BSU’s 3rd Annual Black History Celebration Event

by Hugo Meza

On February 25, 2025, the Fresno High School Black Student Union held their Annual Black History Celebration Event.

Mr. Bugg said the purpose of the celebration is “to spread knowledge of our history. I say our history because its all of OUR history.”

The event ran from 2pm-4pm. From 2-3pm there was a DJ in front of Royce Hall playing music and the BSU and people in attendance were dancing. Around 3pm Royce Hall was open to the public for people to come and watch the presentation they had prepared to show.

The presentation was called Pride in Who We Are. It was split into five segments for each of the letters in the word “pride.” Each segment talked about how the African people are powerful, resilient, innovative, determined, and are expressive.

In between each segment, BSU Historian Urai Wheatley, Vice President Charles Walter, and President Ja-Hadrha Johnson would make a few statements regarding the segments.

BSU Historian Urai Wheatley expressed, “I appreciate the people that showed up and hopefully people learn from this because that’s the whole goal of Black History Month.”

Dual Enrollments

by Levi Gagliano-Bingham

For the Class of 2025, new opportunities for college credit arise. This year, Fresno Unified is offering dual enrollment courses to students at Fresno High, consisting of English IA, Math 11, Communications 8, Child Development 39, Theatre 30, and Journalism 1 classes. These give students the opportunity to get an early lead on college units, while still in high school. Those who enroll can take one class per semester and can gain up to four college units per class. These credits are transferable to any college or university in California. Courses may also be taken during the summer, allowing students to take advantage and get a “big head start for a majority of courses required for college,” shared FHS counselor Yadira Castro. She continued, “Dual enrollment is a great opportunity for students to gain insight on what college is like.”

Semester 1 Academic Awards

by Julianna Kirk

The Fresno High Academic Awards Ceremony was held on January 30, 2025, in Royce Hall. This ceremony is to acknowledge and appreciate the students at Fresno High who received Honor Roll and Principal’s Honor Roll during the 2024 fall semester. Families of students were encouraged to attend and support their students in their academic accomplishments. “The award ceremony was nice, and it was short and got to the point.  I liked how everyone was clapping for everyone,” shared from Destiny Lopez. As the students' names were called, they walked across the stage, shaking hands with principal Mrs. Amy Smith along with two vice principals.

Move Up Days

by Ian Owdom

The middle school Move Up Day is an annual event where middle school students from each feeder school get to tour Fresno High School. The event allows them to intermingle with current Fresno High students and sign up for clubs and sports. February 4 was the first day of this event, which featured Fort Miller students.

The students met in the gymnasium where they were greeted by the Fresno High band performing the fight song, followed by a performance from Fresno High cheer. Afterwards color guard oriented the students with a routine before they were split up into four groups: Pink, Yellow, Blue, and Purple.

Each group would tour Fresno High, stopping at four landmarks. Starting with the library, the CTE building, then Royce Hall, and finally a group would stay in the gymnasium. The group that stayed would see performances from the JROTC drill team and the Folklorico group. At the end, students could visit different tables of clubs, sports, and certain electives.
