Girls’ Tennis 2022

The girls tennis team

Fresno High School’s fall season includes a variety of sports, one of them being Girls’ Tennis. The team practiced Monday, Wednesday, and Friday after school from 3:40 to 5:15 with their coach Mr. Lundberg. Games were held every Tuesday and Thursday, depending on the weather, starting at 3 pm. Tennis rackets were provided to the girls if needed, as well as uniforms.

Teammate Giselle Salcedo Camacho described tennis simply. “At the games there are six singles matches, those are one on one. After the singles, there are 3 doubles. Doubles are two on two.” The team is ranked on a systemic ladder. “The best of the best is on top! I’m #10,” Giselle added. Erica Urena is #1.

During the August and September heatwave, the team canceled outside practice and held meetings in S11 where they spoke and observed strategies, did leg/arm warmups and watched clips of Serena Williams’s matches.

For a successful season and a working team, Girls’ Tennis believed communication and support were important. Communication was strong and the girls supported each other by giving compliments and feedback. Feedback and demonstrations were key to addressing weaknesses. Giselle preferred to show a struggling teammate “her way” of practicing instead of following Coach Lundberg’s exact directions because it tended to be easier. The girls stayed positive by ensuring they pointed out all the good habits and moves made during their matches.

If you’re thinking of joining Girl’s Tennis, don’t be shy, you will be welcomed with open arms!
