Purple Out Game

By Jeremiah Gomez

The Fresno High Warriors took on the Hoover Patriots in Fresno High’s Purple Out Game. There was all purple in the stands, however there was a smaller crowd than usual. Fresno High, coming off a four-game losing streak to start the season, were looking to get on the board with their first win of the season. On the other side Hoover was looking get Fresno High back from their defeat from last year against them. However, Hoovers offensive explosion in the third quarter really buried the Warriors’ chances in winning this game despite their lead at halftime, as Hoover went on to win 14-34.

The first half was an even and competitive game. Both offenses were going back and forth with touchdowns. Fresno High really relied on their running attack from Damareea Farris. He had two touchdowns in the first half. Their defense in the first half was solid as well when they forced a fumble and recovered on Hoover’s first drive of the game. They also blocked a PAT and stopped Hoover from their 2-point Conversion. Fresno High was riding a 14-12 lead at the half. The second half, however, is when Hoover really took over. On Hoover’s first drive of the half, they went on to score a touchdown giving them a 20-14 lead after a successful 2-point conversion. Fresno High had a good drive going to answer Hoover’s touchdown, but then fumbled and Hoover gained possession. On the very first play of the drive for Hoover, they ran it all the way for the touchdown and the lead the warriors had completely slipped away from them in a matter of minutes. Hoover would then be up 26-14 after that long touchdown.

Fresno High really struggled during the second half on both offense and defense as they couldn't get a good drive going. Hoover when they got the ball back scored another long touchdown, that time through the air and a close game had just turned into a blowout. Hoover scored 22 points just in the third quarter. They led 34-14 to end the third quarter. After the stampede of touchdowns from Hoover they quieted down on offense as they already had the game in the bag to that point. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter and the game would end in a score of 34-14 in favor of the Hoover Patriots.

The Fresno High Warriors have fallen to a 0-5 record as Hoover moves up to a 2-3 record. Fresno High will go against Madera South in their next game which is a home game for the Warriors.

by Viriana Flores

On Tuesday, September 19,2023 Fresno High had the honor to host a High School Voter Civic Engagement Fair. This fair took place on the front lawn of Royce Hall called Warrior Park. The Warriors had the pleasure to have some guests such as the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the Power CA Action. The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is a not-for-profit organization whose goal is to assist and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. PowerCA Action has the goal of getting justice and equity for all Californians by building up the leadership of young voters of color and their families.

CTE (Career Technical Education) Coordinator Ms. Kei Shabazz is a Delta Sigma Theta Sorority member. She reached out to her sisters to help inform and engage with Fresno High students, especially the female population. Making a chance in society involves everyone, so why not start with future voters? This Civic Engagement Event was to provide students with information about how to vote and allowed students from the age 16 and up to pre-register to vote.

Senior Sydney Maroot helped prep for the event. “I was excited to be able to register to vote,” she shared. “The volunteers walked me through the process and showed me that my voice matters, especially since there's an election coming up this year. I connected with the PowerCA organization and now have the opportunity to engage in community projects for causes that will truly make a difference. As someone who is planning on studying political science and environmental policy, I was grateful to   be provided with resources at the Civic Engagement Fair. It also opened doors for my CAS project!”

Patriot Day: Remembering 9/11

by Mai Pader Vang

On Tuesday September 11, 2001, at 5:14 am, hijacking and suicide attacks were made on four airlines airplanes, which would crash into building like the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center complex, and another would crash in the Pentagon in Arlington, and a field in Virginia. This incident caused the death or 2,996 people, some have not identified or found to this day.

It has been 22 years since this incident, and it still causes many people trauma. “This event has caused many strict laws and restrictions in the airport and because of this, when I travel it takes longer to go through security,” explained Social Science teacher Mr. Kevin Ochs. “Also, the way people put stereotypes on Mideasterners because they were the people that carried out the attack. Because of this, in the present, it affects the Mideasterners descendants as they can be judged before people even get to know them.”
