2023 CART Winter Showcase
By Bella Garcia
The Center for Advanced Research and Technology, known as CART, was founded in May of 2000. Located in Clovis, CA, CART caters to both Clovis and Fresno Unified School Districts. The student population is made up of high school juniors and seniors. Students can choose and apply for a wide variety of career-based labs. Labs include biomedicine, biotechnology, business and finance, digital marketing, engineering (robotics), environmental science and field research, forensics, game design, law, graphic design, video production, psychology, user experience, and web application. An abundance of Fresno High students attend both CART’s AM and PM sessions.
Every year CART holds the Winter Showcase in January of the second semester. Every lab gives other students, VIPs, and family members the chance to experience the type of learning that is done in that lab with a presentation. Most projects stem from a research assignment.
The 2023 Winter Showcase was Thursday, January 12th. This year, the Environmental Science and Field Research lab presented the importance of water, water quality, as well as biotic and abiotic life in a riparian area. These topics were split between 12 groups, with four to five members each. Some groups had visual models of rivers to demonstrate the effects erosion, the physical aspects of a healthy body of water, water chemistry, and macroinvertebrate studies (insects). This lab’s research stemmed from their project to study the health of the nearby San Joaquin River at Lost Lake near Friant, CA. This year the Biomedicine lab is presenting a variety of emergency response case studies. Forensics had many projects, some include blood studies, fingerprints, bone identification and tire tracks. Psychology had many optical illusions on display.
CART students presented to other labs, elementary students, superintendents, and some board members during CART school hours. For AM the showcase ran from 8:15am-10:15am, for PM 1:15-3:15. The evening session ran from 5-7pm. During the evening session AM and PM students rotated every thirty minutes.
Each laboratory chose one group to participate in a seminar competition held in the school theatre. The topics varied based on groups. For the Environmental Science and Field Research lab, the team taught the audience about their San Joaquin River and Chinook Salmon project. Winners were chosen based on complete knowledge and flawless visual presentation and communication.
Everyone is welcome to explore CART’s laboratories and learn something new.

Neon Blacklight Rally Shirts
By Kailey Espinoza
Fresno High School had their first Blacklight Rally since quarantine!
The theme surrounded Space Jam celebrated the following Winter sports: basketball, soccer, and wrestling. Mrs. Sam Flores collaborated with Fresno High’s Rally Commissioner Mariah Martinez. At the Wednesday T-shirt decorating activity Mariah shared the event was “an exciting way to engage students and be able to include ourselves in the rally theme.”
The lunchtime activity consisted of splattering neon paint on shirts, to ensure they would have a glowing experience at the January 20 rally. Students were allowed to bring their own shirts of whatever color they wished and there were even shirts from the Warrior Rack provided for those who still wanted to participate who forgot. Some students even marked their initials with neon paint. Students left their shirts on a rack that was taken to the Warrior Rack to dry and given on the rally day.
