GPA Barbeque

by Jeremiah Gomez

As the first quarter of the new school year has finished, Students who achieved above a 3.0 G.P.A. for the first quarter received an orange invitation to a Barbeque on October 12th. This Barbeque was a reward to the students at Fresno High that put in extra effort to maintain good grades. Noted on the invitation, students who received them were to be excused from class 10 minutes early and to go to warrior park to celebrate their accomplishment. Over 600 students were able to maintain a 3.0 or higher G.P.A. and received an invitation.

At the barbeque, the food being served was grilled hotdogs, cookies, a bag of chips and bottled water. The counselors of Fresno High were serving the food while congratulating the students for their accomplishment. Ms. Bangerter also said there will be two barbeques this school year. There will be another barbeque during the spring after the 3rd quarter. Congratulations to all the students who were invited to the G.P.A Heroes Barbeque this semester.

The President of the FTA, Manuel Bonilla, acknowledges the hard work that went into establishing a tentative agreement with FUSD.

To Strike or not to Strike?

by Ian Owdom, Editor-in-Chief

Anyone who is in the general area of the Fresno Unified School District has heard about the impending teacher strike. FTA has drawn the line on the following issues: fair pay, lifetime benefits, restoration of benefits, smaller class sizes, and more social emotional support for students.

In FTA’s vision, many of the demands will help make schools a safe environment for both teachers and students. Smaller class sizes will provide teachers with more control over their class. This results in more teachers on campus to be able to provide more supervision over the kids. Many teachers have said they feel the district is perhaps too heavy, and teacher salaries are not keeping pace with the cost of living.

In speaking to a number of teachers, it is visible that their number one reasoning for going on strike is because they love working in Fresno and they just want better working conditions for both teachers and students. The goal of the strike is to improve the overall quality of the city, improving schools and education will have a direct benefit to the city. More functional, educated members of society equals a better city.

But what does this mean for the students? Some students are worried about how this will affect them. Students are concerned about what this missed time means for their learning, and how it will be made up. Common questions being asked are: What will happen to students if there are not enough subs for individual classrooms? Why is the district gearing up to wait out the teachers instead of compromising?

On October 18, teachers were passing out flyers to concerned parents, informing them about the reasoning behind the possible strike.

On Friday October 27, teachers held a mock strike an hour before school to demonstrate what a strike could potentially look like.

On October 31, the day FTA was scheduled to strike, FTA and FUSD held a joint press conference at Fresno High to announce they had come to a tentative agreement.

On November 1, Fresno teachers voted on whether to accept the proposal. The vote was 92% in favor. The FUSD School Board passed the agreement at their Board Meeting
