Wrestling Around
by Chia Na Vang
One word to describe the Fresno High School wrestling team is dedicated. The team practices every weekday from 4:00 pm to around 7:00 pm. On early release schedule, the team starts practice at 2:30 to around 5:00 pm. Senior Adrian Verra-Torres recalls the team practicing during the summer and on holidays, such as Thanksgiving and sometimes Christmas. Practicing until it’s dark to Adrian is “refreshing because the wrestling room is warm and once you go outside it’s nice and cold.”
Another word to describe the team is supportive. If a member was struggling with a move, Adrian suggests getting help from coach Daniels on what move or play to do. Captain and senior Angel Ramirez Vidales said he gives “pointers…” to help his members out.
The Fresno High School wrestling team plays opponents depending on availability. One team Angel would like to go against is McClaine because “they’re the vision. There’s nothing special about them and I think we can beat them.” Adrian on the other hand would like to wrestle with Hoover and Roosevelt. His cousins wrestle at Hoover and he would like to go against them since he wrestled their older brothers when they were younger. Roosevelt because Fresno High won the pig his sophomore year and he would like to keep it.
A few goals from the team include winning matches, everyone getting medals, and going to state.
Redemption on the Court
by: Catherine Spears
Mistakes have consequences, especially in a sport like basketball. The FHS Boys’ basketball team started hot this year, bringing home first place in the Farmersville Tournament during the preseason. Then, as one says, they took their eyes off the ball. “I feel like the season has been mid. We won games and we won tournaments, but we also lost games we should have won. The things I would want to accomplish before the season ends is to go to playoffs and possibly win it all, but we first gotta make it in,” said Jermaine, Schexnayder. Currently, the team is 3-7 in Division 2 League. Refocused, the boys have shaped up and are determined to show redemption of the court.
The team plays on Wednesday and Friday nights. Show support and encouragement by attending Senior Appreciate Night on February 10 as the team faces long-standing rival Roosevelt High School.
“I feel that we can compete with any team but we gotta just trust each other and not be selfish,” said freshman Lafeyette Frierson.
