A Night of Excellence

by Emily Sanchez

Sophomore Emily Sanchez is passionate about representing the African American culture. She shared she has roots in the Nigerian culture and is proud to share traditions and legacy with the school and world. Highlighting the Warrior Way of being a “risk-taker,” Emily suggested a fundraising event centered around the theme of “Living Our Legacy.”

For $10, students, staff, and community were invited to purchase tickets for food, entertainment, raffles, and camaraderie.  Though not mandatory, guests were encouraged to wear African inspired attire or at least something glamorous. But what one wore was not as important as the message of participating in living “our” legacy.

Dinner was tri-tip and all the sides, African drum music was provided by Fresno African Drumming, and Mr. Bugg raffled off various prizes before the main event, a movie.  The guests of over 30, gathered at the steps of Royce Hall for an invigorated processional into the auditorium.

The evening ended around 10 pm. “The event was definitely something to look back on and honor,” said Emily.  “Us all coming together taught the true meaning of what it means to come together as family.”
