The Origins of the Chinese Zodiac Part
By Vanessa Salmeron-Rivera
We’re so used to the Zodiac: Aries, Cancer, Gemini, etc. This year, the Owlet thought we’d try something different, the Chinese Zodiac Horoscopes. So, what is the Chinese Zodiac?
According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order of the zodiac signs would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. To reach the part, the animals had to cross a great river. The twelve animals included Dog, Rat, Ox, Dragon, Tiger, Goat, Snake, Pig, Rabbit, Rooster, Monkey, and Horse. This month, I am going to introduce you to the last two animals.
Dog
Dog came running to the Jade Emperor in eleventh place, even though the Emperor had seen Dog jump into the river first. When questioned about this, Dog explained that it was having too much fun playing and had forgotten about the race. The Jade Emperor was not angry with Dog because it was such a happy creature.
Pig
Pig arrived late to the party, just as the Jade Emperor was about to declare the race over and done. Pig said that though it had already been on the island with the Emperor. It had fallen asleep after a large meal. It did apologize for being late, and the Emperor named it the twelfth place.
