Chess Club

The game of chess has its roots in India 1500 years ago, where it spread across the world from there. Fresno High’s own Chess Club continues this tradition every Wednesday at lunch in S-23. Mr. Bugg is the advisor of the club. He said, “Chess Club improves the school culture by providing an open room to stay in and a place to play the game of Chess.” The club provides students with an opportunity to play games and improve their skills. Currently, with 10 members, the group intends to add Fridays after school to their meeting schedules.
The goal is to involve more people in the game and create a comfortable environment where students can play chess. The group has their eyes set on building their roster and skills so that they can participate in local and state-level tournaments. In addition to playing chess, students are taught techniques, methods, and different variations of chess like Bughouse, a 4-player spin-off game.
Senior Joel Perez said, “I decided to join because I wanted to be involved more on campus and learn a new skill.”
Fernando Pineda, also a senior, announced, “Because it’s fun.”
