Guest Speaker Dr. Kehinde Solwazi

by Kayla Madrigal

On March 2, Fresno High hosted guest speaker Dr. Kehinde Solwazi for the last event for Black History Month. This event was postponed because of EL (English learning) Testing, but finally came to fruition during fourth period in the library. Students and staff were invited to learn about awareness and importance of African American history.

Dr. Kehinde Solwazi spoke about equality, family, how young adults should and always respect their elders no matter what their race is, and the importance of not having hate for one another.  “It's not just about slavery, it is about American history. Without African American history there is no American history.”

Fresno High student Pricilla Cabello shared, “I learned a lot of new things that are not in the history books. It was a wonderful experience.”

Dr. Kehinde Solwazi reminded the students that “we’re all from African American heritage. That we’re all siblings, and we should love one another.”

Classrooms Get an Upgrade

by Conor Hustedde

Fresno High has been exchanging their old chair-desk combos for new, separated furnishings. They have been replacing the old desks since March 7, 2022. According to Principal Laettner, the change was a district decision made at the administrative level. Officials in Fresno Unified had noticed that the old style of connected chairs and tables did not accommodate high school students comfortably, so they opted for new desks that are separated from the chairs. Classrooms that already had separated seating are not receiving the new models. Principal Laettner offered, “I hope students find the new seating much more comfortable because I know that sitting in those desks can be a little tight.”

The company replacing desks does so during the night and it has been slowly changing them out over the last few weeks. The old desks and chairs will be donated to non-profit schools in lower income countries. Classroom recipient Mr. Mark Rivera’s opinion is: “They’re okay, but I think the chairs are less comfortable.”
