Senate Celebrates In-Person Once Again
by Conor Hustedde
On April 23, 2022, the Fresno High Senate met for an Ice Cream Social with alumni. The Ice Cream Social replaced the annual Senate Banquet to avoid risk caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Events where honoraries (previous members of the Fresno High Senate) meet and interact with current senators were held every year until the COVID pandemic. This ice cream social was the first time in three years that such an event has been held.
The event was held behind the Senate chambers and began with honoraries and senators conversing about their experiences as senators, life stories, and future plans, all over ice cream from Ampersand. During the next section of the event, attendees listened to the flag salute led by Chanel Charles, the state of the senate done by Carolina Pulido, and the benediction done by Conor Hustedde. Ms. Kyra Orgill, the President of the United States (POTUS) and club runner then announced the winners of the Senate Scholarships.
Yamilex Cruz won the scholarship for “Most Outstanding Senator,” which is awarded to the senator who is outstanding in their conduct, service, and effort in the Senate. Carolina Pulido won the scholarship for “Best Speech,” determined by a competition given at the previous meeting, which was judged by senators who had graduated from the graduating classes of 2019 and 2020. Following the awards, honoraries Boro and Levee, who had been senators during the 1960s, gave speeches to the attendees commemorating the club.
