Honoring Dedication and Hard Work

Starting in tenth grade, students begin a journey toward a goal that might seem unimaginable, a 4.0 or better grade point average for the next three years. Truly, this is not an easy accomplishment, and in the pressure of failing to earn nearly perfect grades can be overwhelming.  This year, 33 Fresno High students rose to the challenge and earned the privilege of being named Valedictorian. As if this weren’t enough, seven Warriors added the challenge of IB Diploma Candidate to their list of accomplishments. This means that they not only kept a 4.0 or better, but completed at least six IB courses, added the Theory of Knowledge course, created a CAS project, and wrote an Extended Essay.

On the evening of April 29, 2022, Valedictorians, DP candidates, and their families were asked to join Fresno High Principal Mrs. Linda Laettner, IB Coordinator Ms. Kyra Orgill, and the counseling department to honor their challenging work and accomplishments for COVID safe dinner of salad, roll, and pasta. Leadership students under the direction of activities director Mrs. Melissa Bangerter and the support of office manager Ms. Luisa Saldana, created a delightful outdoor dining experience in Warrior Park with tablecloths, real plates and cutlery, and living flowers that will be planted as part of one candidate’s CAS project, the Warrior Garden.

Students were asked to come to the podium and share who they came with to the event, where they are headed after graduation, and what path they are planning to follow for a career. Head counselor Mrs. Tess Seay made sure to provide each senior with their appropriate certificate before they left the spotlight.

The evening came to a close and guests began to leave, including newly elected Fresno School Board member Mr. Andy Levine. Fresno High custodial, as always, did an amazing job setting up for the event and dismantling it as well. Reminding staff that they are all Warriors, and every member has a role to ensure the success and wellbeing of the students.
