Make-Up Trends

As a teenage girl, like many other girls my age, one of my main interests is makeup. Makeup has more recently become its own culture thanks to the help of different social media platforms, but has taken off significantly on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Recently due to quarantine, the makeup products on the market have significantly changed.

Prior to Covid-19, makeup trends focused on having that “flawless photo finish” and having very heavy makeup that was in a way full coverage, matte, and bold look that could be worn in every setting. However, with the Covid-19 lockdown, the makeup industry has started to see a rather dramatic shift in what kind of products are on the market. People once interested in these “heavy “looks began to wear less and less makeup as to having nowhere to wear it. A lot of previous makeup consumers started to invest in things like skin care or hair care since they had all this time where they were not wearing makeup.

After the lockdown restrictions were lifted, people were not into the style and amount of makeup that was used in previous years. During lockdown we saw a shift from a perfect matte look, into a dewy, natural, healthy skin glow. We started to see more and more products like skin tints, liquid blushes, lip tints and lip glosses for that dewy look.

Some current fan favorite products are E.L.F Halo Glow Liquid Filter, Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush, Benefit Cosmetics Liquid Lip Blush and Cheek Tint, and the Maybelline Sky High Mascara (I personally have used this mascara and while it makes my lashes look beautiful, it is almost impossible to remove with micellar water, a cleansing balm and cleansing oil. I’ve even tried coconut oil and it did not budge and washing your lashes with cleanser and water does next to nothing.)

One of the best things about this shift in the industry, is that it focuses on the consumers natural beauty rather than trying to look plastic and doll like. The shift along with more people investing in their skin care and making sure their skin and hair are healthy, could have a positive effect on consumers view of them self. In my personal experience, the shift from showing heavy, flawless makeup into a more natural and accepting of flaws makeup style has drastically influenced me in how I see myself appearance wise compared to others. I think that this makeup style whether it is a trend or not, has a positive impact on all makeup consumers around the globe and influences people to view themselves as a person with flaws and allowing the consumers to accept the fact that they have flaws and everyone else does too.
